How Stress Effects The Body
Understanding the mechanics of stress gives you the advantage of being more aware of and sensitive to your own level of stress and knowing when and how to take proactive steps. This increased awareness also helps you to better care for your family, friends and colleagues. Here are a few stress facts that many people are unaware of:
Fact #1:Your body doesn’t care if it’s a big stress or a little one.
The human body doesn’t discriminate between a BIG stress or a little one. Regardless of the significance, stress affects the body in predictable ways. A typical stress reaction, which most of us experience dozens of times each day, begins with a cascade of 1,400 biochemical events in your body. If these reactions are left unchecked we age prematurely, our cognitive function is impaired, our energy is drained, and we are robbed of our effectiveness and clarity. Continue reading

Chocolate Is Good For Your Health
Many of us chocolate lovers have heard that chocolate has a reputation of being bad and unhealthy. Over the last few years, however, new research has shown that chocolate is GOOD for your health. Don’t know about you, but I am beyond happy! And, I’m pretty certain I already knew that…I mean, how could something sooo delicious and natural be bad for you?
Did you know that the earliest use of chocolate dates back to the Olmec civilization in Mesoamerica? That would be from from c. 1200 BCE to c. 400 BCE. Centered in the Gulf of Mexico, their influence and trade activity spread from 1200 BCE, even reaching as far south as present-day Nicaragua. Among the many trades was chocolate which would be passed on to all those who followed this first great Mesoamerican civilization. Continue reading

Ever have a day (or a week or even a month) where you just didn’t feel fully awake and a little fuzzy? Fibrocystic breast disease (FBD), now referred to as “fibrocystic changes” or “fibrocystic breast condition” (FCC), is a condition (not a disease) characterized by discomfort and lumpy changes in one or both breasts. Crashing Fatigue During Menopause
Many women experience crashing fatigue during menopause and spend wasted time in trying to battle it, before they know the cause behind it. Yoga For Chronic Back Pain
Millions of people live with chronic back pain. Millions! Arthritis of the neck and back are probably the most common causes. Some of the other more common causes come from fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, trauma and cancer. I have been suffering from chronic back pain, now, for close to 20 years from arthritis and an old tail bone fracture. My pain ranged from moderate to quite incapacitating, leaving me unable to enjoy many activities that I had always loved. I’ve tried a myriad of anti inflammatories and anti depressants, physical therapy and chiropractic therapy. All provided limited and very temporary relief. The meds had too many side effects that weren’t worth what little relief I was getting, so I usually stuck with over the counter meds like Aleve. Up until a couple years ago, I had never really considered yoga for my chronic back pain.
About 15 years ago I saw a chiropractor. At first, I experienced huge relief and fairly quickly. Then, after several months, it seemed like the treatments just weren’t helping anymore and, in fact, seemed to make it worse. I sort of gave up and started accepting the idea that living in pain was just the way it was going to be. Continue reading
Vegetarians And Protein
I come from a family full of vegetarians, including my mom, sister, brother-in-law, a couple nieces and an aunt. Every family gathering includes both meat and meatless dishes. The usual meatless ops usually include beans, tofu, nuts and quinoa. All excellent sources of protein, but most require some sort of cooking involved. I live alone and am not a huge fan of cooking a meal just for myself, so I end up eating a lot of salads. That, too, is fine but lacking in the protein department. And, even though I am not a vegetarian, I don’t really consume much meat, which led me to look into more about vegetarians and protein.
What are the alternative choices to meat? Do I need a supplement? What’s the daily protein allowance? These are some of the questions we’re going to cover here. Continue reading
Reiki Healing Therapy: Is It For You?
Is Reiki healing something you’ve always wondered about, but weren’t really sure who to ask? Wondering if Reiki Healing Therapy is for you? Here, I will give you a brief introduction to what Reiki healing therapy is and what happens during a typical treatment, as well as the healing benefits that are possible.
Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese name consisting of 2 words Rei and Ki meaning spiritually guided life energy (commonly known as Universal Life Energy), an energy which animates us all and is found all around us. Reiki helps to harmonize body, mind and spirit for yourself or anyone you want to help.
Reiki healing therapy is a form of alternative medicine or spiritual healing developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui. Reiki was introduced to the USA and Canada in the 70’s. It uses a technique commonly called palm healing or hands-on-healing. Through the use of this technique, practitioners transfer “universal energy” through the palms of the practitioner by placing them lightly on or just above the recipient’s body, which encourages healing.
